For many years
Sunbury has valued the importance of leadership for its potential to develop
attributes in students that help them become valued members of their
communities. This potential has been fostered through the student council where
students from years one to seven are elected as class delegates to discuss
issues such as fundraising for school and charities, purchase of resources to
benefit students and planning for special events. These representatives learn
that by working as a team to achieve shared goals much can be gained.
Over the last three
years there has been a considerable focus on the leadership roles placed on the
year seven students. The scope of leadership roles has changed over time with
the introduction of leadership in many areas to include leaders for:
- Cultural
- Music
- Library
- Technology and
- The Arts
- Environmental
Students need to
develop an idea in their own minds of what leadership means to them and the
school as well as the roles they are about to play.
Students in year
six and seven are taught the Five Building Blocks of Leadership from the ‘New
Young Leaders Program’ developed by Michael Grose. These are Public Speaking,
Responsibility, Confidence, Organisation and Team Skills. ( More information
about the New Young Leaders Program program can be found at
www.youngleadersprogram.com.au
The path to
becoming a school leader at Sunbury involves understanding the building blocks,
taking part in the schools Leadership Camp, nominating oneself as a candidate
and seeking endorsement from a member of staff, making a speech to staff and
students, being short listed by peers, being interviewed by staff as to potential
and finally becoming elected. Despite this path being long and demanding, over
80% of eligible students choose to take part; a clear indication of how much our
students value Leadership.
We realise that not
all of our students will aspire to be leaders, but we believe that all students
should understand leadership and the role they play in it, as students and as
adults.
Our leadership
program is held in high regard by students, parents and teachers as it prepares
our students to be responsible contributing members of our community. It has
had a positive impact on student reputation as our senior students realise that
they are role models for all students at our school and as such are leaders.
