CLASS NEWS

P/1C

We are making puppets for our puppet show and planning “‘food, drink, tickets and posters” to go with it.

2N

2N were very excited to hear that we are going bowling because our class raised the most money during the school Spell-a-thon.  We can't wait to go.  We have been working hard learning about islands and making choices about a deserted island that we have landed on.  We are looking forward to sports day next week.  Don't forget - letter free dress this Friday.  Our letter is M.

5R

With reporting time fast approaching, students have been finishing projects and doing assessments.  Biographies are starting to come together, with most students nearly finished their first draft.

6P

Mrs. Paterson is a student herself learning all about Robotics from Mr. Ethell, an Aldridge High school teacher.  She’s passing on what she is learning to us.  So far we’ve constructed a robotic vehicle and tested the distance travelled.  We will be graphing the information.

MARY POPPINS

Congratulations to these students for being selected to be part of a Mary Poppins Art Workshop on Thursday, 5th June:

Ambah Heffernan, Jonathon Mugford, Shakara Best, Summer Mears, Taliah Fletcher, Keriann Zipperer, Kira Brieschke, Hayleigh Ford, Breanna Fletcher, Amy Mollee, Joel Appleyard.

Well done on your great behaviour and effort.

All of the work produced during the workshop will form the basis of an exhibition to be on display at the Old Warehouse Art Gallery during the Mary Poppins Festival week from 1st – 11th July.

Thank you Mrs. Puller for supervising on her day off.

TUCKSHOP NEWS

- TUCKSHOP HELPERS

Without extra helpers, the tuckshop will cease to operate on Thursdays.   Please ring Deidre ( 4123 4888 or Janelle ( 4122 4471/0408412244 if you are able to volunteer some time – one day per month would be an exceptional help!

- MENU

Due to a lack of helpers there will be no more Thursday special days.

Until further notice there will be no Slush Puppies for sale.  Juice or milk poppers are available instead.

STUDENT COUNCIL

On Friday we will be having a dress up day to raise money for the school.  Each class has been given a letter to start their costume.  Participation is by gold coin donation.  Clothes need to be sun safe and appropriate for school.  Have fun!

SPORTS CARNIVAL

Our Athletics Carnival highly encourages participation of all students.  When organising race events, children in years Prep/1/2 & 3 will run in their year level cohort, not age level.  Children born 1999 or older will run in their age group.

Programs will be sent out the day before sports day, which you can bring on the day.

%      Families are welcome to share their lunches together in our undercover area.  All people will be asked to leave the oval during the lunch break - including children and parents.

%      In fairness to all, parents and spectators are asked to refrain from being near the finish line and from being too close to the sprint tracks.

%      The judges’ decision is final – any concerns should be raised immediately with the overall carnival judges – Mr Rossiter.

%      Please be aware of the safety barriers near and around the shot put areas.

%      No one is permitted to bring aerosol cans or colour sprays to school.  Nikko/Textas are not to be used for body graffiti.  Children are permitted to colour hair/faces only if it is done at home.

%      All adventure playground equipment is OUT OF BOUNDSto ALL”.  A Safety Barrier will be placed around this area.

%      Streamers are permitted only if kept totally dry.

%      Parents must be responsible for any young children in their care.

%      Please remember our “No Smoking” policy.  Refrain from smoking anywhere on or near the school grounds.

Tuckshop order forms for sports day will be  sent home this week.  The orders and money need to be returned by Monday, 16th June to enable time to place orders.   No late orders will be accepted.

Any helpers for the tuckshop on the day would be greatly appreciated – this will help reduce the waiting time during lunch breaks. Please let Deidre at the Tuckshop know if you are able to help.  All that is needed is an hour or so of your time during the day.

WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL DAY

Last Thursday was World Environmental Day.  This means you could change a light bulb and put a power saving light bulb in.  This will lower your power consumption and create an awareness around the world to limit greenhouse gasses.  Remember preventing green house gasses could reduce our climate change.

Prep V and Prep/1 C

This term we have been talking about cultural diversity. To celebrate Reconciliation Week we have been making hands and planting a garden of hands. We had lots of fun discussing how each one was different and the same.

HEAD LICE

To avoid the spread of head lice if your child has long hair, please note that it is school policy that hair is tied back.

Parenting tips

There have been requests from parents recently asking for parenting ideas that will remain consistent with the approach taken by the school.  Our Leadership program is based on the work of Michael Grose.  Michael has also created a parenting ideas program.  Over the coming weeks we will include snippets of the 16 elements that Michael talks about.  You can also find his information on line at www.parentingideas.com.au .

ASSERTIVENESS

WHEN A CHILD OR YOUNG PERSON IS UNDER PROVOCATION, BEING BULLIED OR TEASED HE OR SHE SHOULD:

• Make eye contact; stand in a balanced, comfortable position about a metre from the person provoking the aggression.

• Using a firm voice, ask the other person to stop what he or she is doing. Use the person’s name if possible.

• Repeat the response if the behaviour doesn’t stop.

• If the provocation continues he or she should walk away, ignoring the aggressor or seeking an adult if they feel in danger.

WHEN A CHILD OR YOUNG PERSON NEEDS TO STAND UP FOR HIS OR HER RIGHTS, TO ASK FOR SOMETHING, TO MAKE A STATEMENT OR BE LISTENED TO RATHER THAN IGNORED HE OR SHE SHOULD:

• Attract the person’s full attention;

• Be polite and use the person’s name;

• Make good eye contact and use a strong stance; and

• State the request or statement using a firm voice;

• Give the other person an opportunity to respond if appropriate. Ask questions to clarify the other person’s position. Be polite but firm and avoid personal insults or using a whining voice.

Encourage your child to practise assertiveness in low risk situations

in front of the family or even in

front of a mirror.

COMMUNITY NEWS

SOS FOR HOST FAMILIES

Open Your Door to the World -

It is the dream of many teenagers to visit our vast and “exotic” country, Down Under. Their dream can only come true with your help. It is only through the hospitality of caring families, with an interest in better cultural understanding and world peace, that these dreams can become reality. STS Student Exchange urgently needs volunteer host families for students arriving in July 2008, from Europe. We have both boys and girls from several countries with a variety of interests in urgent need of a host family.

If you would like to join a unique and growing group of families we need to hear from you now. Please phone Margaret 3204 2156
