TEACHERS AT LITERACY TRAINING

State wide, all teachers of prep, years 1,2 and 3 plus special education teachers and learning support teachers are gaining a five day training package for the teaching of literacy.  We have employed replacement teachers on contract to ensure continuity of teaching in our staff member’s absences.  So far feedback from this training has been very positive and I look forward to being able to share more information in the near future.

In 2008 Education Queensland has committed to commence the training program for all teachers from year 4 to 10.  This is a massive undertaking which should provide some excellent results in terms of currency of teacher pedagogy and practice.

TEACHER SHORTAGES

Please bear with us whilst the five day literacy training blocks for teachers proceed as it is causing some hiccups for finding replacement teachers for sick days.  As Maryborough and Hervey Bay have the literacy training set for similar times, the increase in the number of short term contracts to replace class teachers attending the literacy training, results in a considerable shortage in the number of supply teachers available.

In some cases, we have already experienced days where supply teachers are unavailable.  In these cases, we will use specialist teachers to take classes, or may even have to double up classes where this is not possible.  We thank you in advance for your understanding where this has to occur.

POLICE ATTENDANCE

There was lots of interest at school yesterday morning with the police forensics experts dusting various doors for finger prints due to an attempted break in sometime over the weekend.  Fortunately access was not gained.

We were very pleased that our local police show such a responsive role in these matters and even more pleased that they are happy to have students observing their work when it is appropriate to do so.

BRILLIANT SPORTS DAY

Phew, just watching the participation and keen involvement of the majority of our students on sports day made me feel like I had run a marathon!  We are thrilled with the demonstrations of good sportsmanship that were displayed both on the day of the athletics carnival as well as all of the lead up events.  Sunbury has lots to be proud of when we see our students so actively modelling our values of respect, responsibility, effort and safety.

We heard many positive comments from both new and old families and staff.  One parent expressed her delight that despite having attended many sports carnivals at other schools, she had never witnessed so much heartfelt cheering for students who were placing towards the latter part of a race.  She was really excited that all children were being encouraged by each other as well as staff to do their best.

We have many people to thank and recognise for their efforts both on the day and leading up to it:

·   Thanks to the tuckshop volunteers and organisers who in some cases sadly missed out on seeing their own children compete.

·   Thanks to our sports leaders and other year seven students who worked so hard to ensure that everyone could participate and enjoy the day.

·   Thanks to our teachers who managed events so enthusiastically and enjoyed the day along with the students and families.

·   Thanks to our office staff for the preparation and organisation, ordering of ribbons, caps and medallion engraving as well as scoring and record keeping.

·   Thanks to our grounds care staff and cleaners for their set up, pull down and clean up!

·   Thanks to our families who once again turned out in force to enjoy the day with their children.

·   Finally, a massive thanks to our well behaved students who made the day such a special event on our school calendar.

Our staff works hard to ensure that our students are kept busy for the day involved in games and activities that are appropriate for their age and developmental stage. We also work hard to ensure that there is a balance of opportunity for children to work together as a team to achieve a goal as well as working independently to achieve their individual best.

FACILITIES NEWS

Our prep refurbishment starts tomorrow.  This will see the continuation of temporary fencing, noisy machinery and lots more building for the next few months.

TAX RETURNS

Thanks to those families who have made the suggestion that parents use money from their tax returns and/or yearly family benefit to pay what they owe the school.

Text Box: How you can help your child to become a better reader and speller.
The more that children read, the better they can spell because they see more words and can make better decisions about what looks right.

&	Consider a subscription to a children’s magazine. Magazines can be good reading for pleasure and information, and children enjoy receiving their own post.
&	Write your supermarket shopping list clearly and ask your child to help you read it in the shop. This can be fun, and it helps your child to build a sight vocabulary based on familiar things.
& Let your children see you reading – for enjoyment, for news, and for information in cookery books, directories, manuals, etc. in this way children will see that reading is important to you for many reasons.

CLASS NEWS

PREP/1

We all had a great day on sports day and did our best in every event.  Thanks for everyone’s support.

Year 1/5E

Well done 1/5 E for being so independent and well behaved on Sports day.  I was very proud of how the older children assisted other house and class members during the day.

Year 1MN

Last week we sent letters to members in our community asking for visitors to come and talk to our class about their jobs.  We are very excited to have three replies so far.  If you would like to talk to us about your job, please let us know.

Year 3CP

Congratulations to Natalie Lewis and Jay Grimshaw who are our new class representatives for this semester.

Year 3T

Students in 3T had a fantastic day on Friday.  They all participated enthusiastically and their behaviour was exemplary.

Year 4R

Children have been busy completing their autobiographies and they are now sitting in ‘our own library’.  We have been looking at China as one of our neighbours – ask students about tangram puzzles.  All had a great time at sports day.

Year 4M

We are currently exploring the weather and have been learning about the water cycle.  We had fun using the new interwrite white boards and learnt a lot.

Year 5P

Our solar boats are being tested – as are our team skills.  Students are not only learning the finer arts of boat and solar construction, but also and perhaps more importantly about how they work with others.  Trial and error, back to the drawing board and team work is what this unit is all about!

HPE

Year 1-4 will be starting a unit of work learning gymnastics skills and concepts whilst the year 5,6 & 7 students will hone their softball skills.

LEAVING THE SCHOOL

Parents, please be aware that all children have been reminded that once they arrive at school they are not permitted to leave again during the day without permission.  Sadly we are seeing many children darting across to the shop and when they’re being asked by staff about their choices, we are being told that their Mum or Dad told them to go.  Please support our school and help to explain that the children are NOT permitted to leave the school grounds once they have arrived for the day.

LIBRARY NEWS

Sunbury Library Book Sale – Our Library book sale is coming up later this term.  Ex-Library books will be sold for as little as 20 cents each.  If you have any books at home that you would like to donate for the sale, please send them to the Library.

We will soon have more class reading books to cover.  If you can offer some assistance with book covering please see Mrs. O’Brien in the Library.
