SPORTS CARNIVAL

We look forward to seeing you at our sports carnival this Friday.

Programs will be sent home on Thursday.

There are lots of ways you can help you child prepare by taking an interest:

¬       ask your child in year 5,6 & 7 about their personal best performances in the throwing and jumping events,

¬       practice relay baton changes with all ages groups,

¬       have a running race with your child,

¬       practice the start of a sprint race,

¬       go for a jog together.

Programs will be sent out the day before sports day, which you can bring on the day.

%      Families are welcome to share their lunches together in our undercover area.  All people will be asked to leave the oval during the lunch break - including children and parents.

%      In fairness to all, parents and spectators are asked to refrain from being near the finish line and from being too close to the sprint tracks.

%      The judges’ decision is final – any concerns should be raised immediately with the overall carnival judge – Mr Robinson.

%      Please be aware of the safety barriers near and around the shot put areas.

%      No one is permitted to bring aerosol cans or colour sprays to school.  Nikko/Textas are not to be used for body graffiti.  Children are permitted to colour hair/faces only if it is done at home.

%      All adventure playground equipment is OUT OF BOUNDSto ALL”.  A Safety Barrier will be placed around this area.

%      Streamers are permitted only if kept totally dry.

%      Parents must be responsible for any young children in their care.

Please remember our “No Smoking” policy.  Refrain from smoking anywhere on school grounds.

Any helpers for the tuckshop on the day would be greatly appreciated – this will help reduce the waiting time during lunch breaks. Please let Annette at the Tuckshop know if you are able to help.  All that is needed is an hour or so of your time during the day.

Remember the emphasis of our sports day is fun, participation and making the best effort possible. Come and join in with the fun.

CLASS NEWS

PREP/1

We are writing a letter to Maryborough City Council to request a yellow-topped recycling bin.

Year 1/5E

With Sports Day on Friday, homework will be wanted Monday.  The children have been set a challenge to develop a room plan which will accommodate the new computers and our other furniture!

Year 2CW

We are currently making puppets as part of our fairy tale theme.  Over the next few weeks we will be exploring different kinds of puppets, including sock puppets.  You can help our learning by donating clean, old socks for art and craft.  Thank you for your support.

Year 4R

Come and see our display in the Office foyer showcasing some of the work done in Terms 1 & 2 and the beginning of Term 3.

Year 5P

Solar boats “powering” ahead!  Designs are interesting made out of recycled materials.  The children are writing up experiments and writing a hypothesis about the results.

Text Box: DON’T COVER THE PICTURES!

Are you helping or hindering your child’s reading development?

We are thrilled with how many parents regularly read with their children at home, as this is a critical part to their reading development. Sharing stories, being read to and listening to your children read are all very important activities that should happen daily.

However, we are always concerned to hear from children, that “Mummy or Daddy cover up the pictures” – especially when they are having trouble reading the words – “to make them read better!”

Consider this: when you get an instruction manual that shows you how
to build or make something or how to set up a new piece of electronic
equipment, do you cover up the diagrams and pictures, or do you use
them to support your understanding of what you are reading?

Reading is all about comprehending and gaining meaning.

When we take away the pictures, we are removing a very important
“meaning clue” that actually helps the child to get meaning.

Please don’t cover the pictures!
Year 7

For those students who wish to do homework online it can be found at www.sunburyss.eq.edu.au.  If students wish to e-mail their homework back, Mr. Rossiter’s email address is jross90@eq.edu.au and Mr Bolton’s’ is gbolt4@eq.edu.au.  Grade 7 spelling lists for the upcoming spell-a-thon can also be found on the school’s website.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

All Concert Band members received a newsletter regarding the Eisteddfod performance this week.  Students are to come to school by 8.15am on Wednesday for their last band rehearsal before the Eisteddfod.  Students to be at the Brolga theatre by 10am.

Please return permission notes to the office as soon as possible.

Parents please note:  A note is going home today with all String students.  Please check with your child if they have brought it home.

How much food?

If children are in child care for eight or more hours a day, they should have about half of all the food they eat in a day while they are in child care.  The food they take with them should be about the same amount as that they have for breakfast and the evening meal together.  The actual amount eaten will depend on each child’s age, appetite and activity.

A sample lunchbox for full childcare:

Morning tea:

·          One small cup of milk (fresh or UHT)

·          One piece of fruit

Lunch:

·          Baked beans, chicken, ham, tuna or egg sandwich with cheese or lasagne and salad

·          Carrot and celery sticks

·          Water

Afternoon tea:

·          ½ scone

·          1 small cup of milk

Is Your Child Overweight?

The Parenting and Family Support Centre at the University of Queensland is designing a version of the Positive Parenting Program to help parents of overweight children aged between 5 and 12 years.  We are currently conducting a survey to find out about the challenges that these parents face.

If you are a parent of a 5 to 12-year-old overweight child, we would love to hear from you!

Sharing your experiences (confidentially) is valuable in helping to develop strategies to assist parents in the areas that are needed. Results of this study will also be available to participants. If you would like to be involved in this research, the survey

can be completed online at http://experiment.psy.uq.edu.au/parentingchallenges.  If you have any questions about this research or would like a paper and pencil copy of the survey, please contact Kate at parentingchallenges@psy.uq.edu.au or on 0412196493.
