Year 3,5,7 Statewide Tests in Literacy and Numeracy

The Statewide Tests in Literacy and Numeracy for children in Year 3, 5 or 7 in all state schools and most non-state schools will be held on Tuesday, August 21 and Wednesday, August 22. Aspects of Measurement and Data, Number, and Space will be assessed in the Numeracy Test, while aspects of Reading and Viewing, Spelling, and Writing, will be assessed in the Literacy Test. The tests are based on Queensland syllabuses and are designed to cover a wide range of children's abilities across the State. In the fortnight leading up to the tests children will work with some test preparation materials to help the children understand and practise the types of responses that they will need to give. Towards the end of the year parents will be provided with an individual student report based on the tests. The results in this student report should be considered along with other assessment information provided by the school. Parents/carers are asked to help by not planning for absences on these days and ensuring that their children are at school on time for these days. You can also help by ensuring that your children feel comfortable about the tests by pointing out that they will cover content that they do every day in class. You should talk to the Principal if you require any further information about exemption or special consideration for these tests.

2006 SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT

Included with today’s newsletter is a copy of our school’s annual report for the 2006 school year. The report is only a summary for the many things that we did at our school last year, and as it is supposed to be only a short summary, we couldn’t fit in all of the excellent work done by students and staff. We hope that you enjoy reading the report.

SPORTS CARNIVAL

We look forward to seeing you at our sports carnival next Friday 27th of July.  There are lots of ways you can help you child prepare by taking an interest:

¬       ask your child in year 5,6 & 7 about their personal best performances in the throwing and jumping events,

¬       practice relay baton changes with all ages groups,

¬       have a running race with your child,

¬       practice the start of a sprint race,

¬       go for a jog together.

Programs will be sent out the day before sports day, which you can bring on the day.

%      Families are welcome to share their lunches together in our undercover area.  All people will be asked to leave the oval during the lunch break - including children and parents.

%      In fairness to all, parents and spectators are asked to refrain from being near the finish line and from being too close to the sprint tracks.

%      The judges’ decision is final – any concerns should be raised immediately with the overall carnival judges – Mr Robinson.

%      Please be aware of the safety barriers near and around the shot put areas.

%      No one is permitted to bring aerosol cans or colour sprays to school.  Nikko/Textas are not to be used for body graffiti.  Children are permitted to colour hair/faces only if it is done at home.

%      All adventure playground equipment is OUT OF BOUNDSto ALL”.  A Safety Barrier will be placed around this area.

%      Streamers are permitted only if kept totally dry.

%      Parents must be responsible for any young children in their care.

More information will be in next week’s newsletter.

Please remember our “No Smoking” policy.  Refrain from smoking anywhere on school grounds.

Tuckshop order forms for sports day were sent home last week.  The orders and money need to be returned by Friday 20th July to enable time to place orders.   No late orders will be accepted.

Any helpers for the tuckshop on the day would be greatly appreciated – this will help reduce the waiting time during lunch breaks. Please let Annette at the Tuckshop know if you are able to help.  All that is needed is an hour or so of your time during the day.

Remember the emphasis of our sports day is fun, participation and making the best effort possible. Come and join in with the fun.

SCHOOL COSTS

Please send in your school levy and outstanding fees before the end of next week.

Text Box: FACTS ABOUT READING - THE SEARCH FOR MEANING

&	Meaning is the purpose of reading, not ‘sounding out’.
&	Everyone makes errors in reading.
&	Everyone learns differently because everyone has different memory networks.
&	Some errors have no effect upon meaning.
&	Many errors have no effect upon meaning.
&	The more we concentrate upon avoiding errors, the more errors we make.
&	The more we concentrate upon avoiding errors, the less we will understand.
&	Many people do not perform well in oral reading, although they can read well silently.
&	Speed of reading is generally related to how much we already know about the content.
&	Efficient readers predict a lot.
&	Efficient readers take risks with words they don’t know.
